Lake Kiowa is a gated residential community just south of the Oklahoma border and the Red River, nine miles east of Gainesville in southeastern Cook County, Texas. There are approximately 1,700 acres of land surrounding a tree shaded 583-acre man-made lake and a PGA rated 18-hole golf course. There are more than twenty-one miles of hard surfaced roads; all utilities are underground; cable TV and high speed Internet are available in this community that comprises the third largest community in Cooke County. Lake Kiowa is a serene, beautiful, fun, friendly, exciting, and safe community.
American Realty of Memphis, Tennessee began development of Lake Kiowa in 1967. The 2000 US Census shows there were 1,064 homes at that time, with 861 of those occupied year-round and the remainder being used for weekend retreats. The 2000 Census also showed that 90% of the homes were valued between $50,000 and $300,000. In late 2004 there were approximately 1200 homes in the community, with values ranging as high as $900,000. Lake Kiowa is an unincorporated community. Each property owner is a member of the Lake Kiowa Property Owners Association. Lake Kiowa is governed by an elected nine-member Board of Directors. A Community Manager, under the direction of the Board, carries out day-to-day operations, such as the golf course, lake and street maintenance, 24-hour security gate and patrol system. In the beginning, many of Lake Kiowa’s residents were retirees from all over the world. However, many residents now commute to work in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex area. The population of young families is growing as shown by the increase in school bus use to the Callisburg Independent School District.
